There are grants available for those who wish to renew or repair their thatched roof. This is available from the Department of the Environment and Local Government. There are a number of criteria which must be met before you are deemed eligible for this grant. This includes, but is not limited to the following:
The house must be more than ten years old.
The house must have previously had a thatched roof.
The house must be structurally sound.
The building must also be used as a main resident. (This grant is not available to those who only plan on using it part time).
The building must go through an inspection carried out by the inspector of the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government.
All work is carried out by a thatcher who follows best practice within the industry.
The total cost of the restoration must be more than €952.
All those who apply must provide their income tax and ensure that all tax affairs are in order.
